What makes Loches a top study abroad destination?

The riverside medieval town of Loches is one of our top destinations to study French in France for a transition year abroad. Students attend the St Denis International School and get to learn alongside local French students and other international students alike.

Here’s the top 5 things that make Loches a firm study abroad favourite amongst our students.

1. A beautiful idyllic location

Located in the Loire Valley region of France, Loches is surrounded by rich countryside, forests and streams – offering a calm and safe environment for teenagers to explore, walk and ride bikes in their spare time.

2. Rich in history

Loches is steeped in medieval history and is one of the best-preserved towns in France. You’ll have fun exploring its narrow traffic-free streets in the old town and its castle keep, royal residence and fine churches. The chateau and dungeon are within easy walking distance and are well worth a visit to learn about the connection with Richard the Lionheart.

3. Park time

Chill out in the town’s pretty public park located on the other side of the river looking up to the chateau. It’s a great place for a picnic and to spend time with new friends in your spare time.

4. Sporting facilities

If you enjoy sports and activities, there are plenty on offer at the St Denis school in the evenings and at weekends. Football, basketball, athletics, roller-hockey, swimming and karate to name just a few.

5. Cultural events

Throughout the year, Loches plays host to a number of cultural events such as the Festival of the Opera, Nocturnal Shows at the Chateau and lively night markets during the summer months. Ideal for soaking up the local culture.
